It has been quite some time since I've written for Lavender and Co. Botanicals, and thought I would ease my way back into the flow of things with a nice lifestyle based post. I hope that this blog post shines a light on a topic that perhaps you haven't thought of as important, or reminds you of it and rein-spires you to live in such a way.
As children we had an innate knowing, connection, and understanding of Mother Nature. Whether you had little hands dirtied from making mud pies, or collected leaves and flowers along the side walk, made homes in the branches of trees, or simply laid on a nice patch of grass.. All of us had a relationship with our Earth, whether we knew it or not.
As we grow through adolescence it seems as though there are many things that are new, and more exciting than spending time in nature. Though I remember many camping trips and outdoor adventures at this time, being able to truly appreciate and connect with my surroundings was the last thing on my mind.
It has been only recently, in my 20's that I am slowly coming back into alignment with the natural world. Through my naturopathy studies, and my interest in herbalism in general has led me back to where I, and we, all begun.
So why is having this connection with nature important ?
Personally I believe it is important for a number of reasons. First of all, it brings us back to the knowing that we are all connected and that what we do on this earth, matters. Our actions have an effect and an impact on those around us and our wider surroundings. If we know this deep within ourselves, then we are more likely to make these effects positive ones. ie. being eco friendly as much as possible.
It' also important because, in my opinion, it is how we are meant to live. Humans use to respect the gifts of the earth, honour her cycles and give thanks for all that she provides. Although we possess the ability to create the infrastructures and technology we have today, it doesn't mean we should ignore our natural ways of living. With feet barefoot in the earth, attuned to the seasons of the year, the cycles of the moon.
I'm not saying to abandon all of modern day life, simply remember what we are, how we use to live, and the connection we can have by being observant and taking the time to get to know our mother.
So, how does one begin the journey back to connectedness ? How do we begin to understand and know nature in all her forms ?
I think it's important to remind ourselves that this is a life long process, and in knowing this we can be released of the pressure to know everything at once. Because there are so many different ways you can start to reconnect, and for many people I'm sure a large list of these will just feel overwhelming. So instead of listing, I'll be starting a little mini series after this blog post is released to share with you some practical, every day ways you can begin this journey. This series will be starting with one of my favourite ways to stay tuned in to natures rhythm - the moon cycles ! Be sure to check follow the Lavender and Co.
